Program Overview

Genetics is one of the most captivating fields that has significantly advanced in the 21st century. The study of DNA is not only intellectually stimulating but also carries wide-ranging practical applications from its role in forensic investigations and court cases to the development of novel therapies for genetic diseases. A comprehensive understanding of the genome has profound medical, social, and legal implications.

In Pakistan, where agriculture forms the backbone of the economy, genetic research is vital for ensuring sustainable crop and livestock health. Moreover, our country is among the most severely affected by genetic disorders such as thalassemia, hereditary deafness, and blindness. Graduates of this program will gain in-depth knowledge of genomes and access to diverse research opportunities at both national and international levels. With a strong foundation in genetics, they will also play a crucial role in creating awareness among the general population.

The Bachelor of Science in Genetics (BS Genetics) is a four-year undergraduate program designed to prepare students for dynamic careers across multiple sectors, including Healthcare and Diagnostics (genetic testing, clinical bioinformatics, precision medicine pipelines, genetic counselling), Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology sectors (drug target discovery, computational biology, omics-based drug design), Agriculture & Food technology (genomic selection in crops and livestock, microbiome data analysis), Public health and Epidemiology (AI models for pathogen genomics, outbreak tracking, antimicrobial resistance surveillance), Forensic Scientists (DNA serology and crime scene investigation through genetic analysis) Academia and Teaching (contributing to education and research in genetics and allied fields).

The program is taught by experienced faculty in state-of-the-art laboratories and purpose-built lecture halls, supported by comprehensive physical and digital library resources. Real-world exposure is provided through structured internships and final-year research projects, enabling graduates to emerge as skilled geneticists ready to contribute effectively in diverse professional domains.

Program Vision Produce competent, ethical, and research oriented geneticists with a commitment for the advancement of healthcare, agriculture, biotechnology and forensics at national and global levels.

Program Mission The program will produce skilled geneticists equipped with scientific knowledge, technical expertise, critical thinking, and a strong sense of professional ethics, enabling them to spread awareness and provide solutions to the pressing genetic and health-related issues faced by our community and beyond.

Scope of BS Genetics The BS Genetics program will equip students with theoretical and practical knowledge of heredity, molecular biology, and genomics. It will prepare graduates for careers in healthcare, biotechnology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and forensic sciences. The curriculum will emphasize laboratory training, research skills, and application of modern genetic technologies. Graduates will be well-positioned to pursue advanced studies in genetics, molecular medicine, and allied disciplines. With the increasing global demand for genetic expertise, the program will enable students to contribute to personalized medicine, disease diagnosis, crop improvement, and industrial biotechnology.

Market Needs With the rapid growth of the genetic testing market, there is a strong demand for professionals who can conduct, interpret, and manage genetic diagnostics. Personalized and precision medicine is expanding, meaning geneticists are needed to tailor treatments, identify biomarkers, and collaborate with healthcare providers. Agricultural biotechnology also requires genetics expertise for developing disease-resistant crops, improving yields, and addressing food security challenges. There is growing emphasis on bioinformatics, big data analysis, and computational skills, to handle the large volumes of sequence and genetic variation data. Genetic counseling and clinical genetics are in higher demand, as awareness of inherited diseases, prenatal screening, and familial risk grows.

Global opportunities

  • Growing demand in medical and clinical genetics roles worldwide – geneticists are essential in diagnostics, precision medicine, newborn screening, and genetic disease research.
  • Opportunities in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries (drug discovery, gene therapy, bio manufacturing) leveraging skills in molecular genetics and genomics.
  • Global push for agricultural innovation: improving crop yields, creating disease-resistant varieties, use of genomics for sustainable farming practices.
  • Rising need for bioinformatics, computational biology, and big data analysts to process genomic data, build pipelines, and integrate data with health or ecological systems.
  • Roles in public health, epidemiology, environmental genetics (e.g. managing genetic risk factors for populations, conservation genetics, policy).
  • Academic and research positions with international institutions and funding bodies, enabling cross-border collaborations, fieldwork, and advanced training (masters & PhD)
